Grown in the protected area of the Dong Ting mountains in Jiangsu province. This is where the authentic and best Bi Luo Chun is grown, with optimum conditions for delicious tea. Bi Luo Chun from any other area is considered to be fake and of low quality. Picked for only 23 days every year in early spring, the tea bushes are then left for a whole year. It is planted near peach, apricot and plum trees which add flavour and fragrance to the tea. 

Legend says that a young girl was picking this tea and filled her basket, in order to take extra tea she put some leaves in between her breasts. The warmth of her body heated the leaves and released an amazing fragrance that astonished her. The name stuck until Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing dynasty travelled to the area where this tea is grown. He sampled the tea and was so taken by its taste and purity that he asked the name. He felt that the name was vulgar and upon inspection of the dried tea, proclaimed the tea to be called Green Snail Spring and made it an imperial tea.

Green coil is a very sensitive tea and you must pay attention to get the best out of it. Do not overbrew, use too much leaf or use boiling water with Bi Luo Chun as it will impart a bitter flavour (more than other green teas).  Sprinkle in hot water (to stop them being scalded) and watch them transform into pastel green leaves with a pale yellow liquor.

The lightness of the brew is contrasted with an incredibly fragranced and lively tea with shifting apricot and elderflower flavours, a floral scent and slightly nutty finish. This tea was originally called 'astonishingly fragranced' in China.


To brew Western style, infuse about 2g (heaped teaspoon) of leaf per 300ml of 80c water for about 2 minutes. You can reinfuse up to 3 times by adding 60 seconds for every subsequent infusion.

To brew Gong fu style, infuse about 5g of leaf per 150ml of 80c water for about 5 seconds. You can reinfuse up to 5 times by adding about 5 seconds for every subsequent infusion.
